The Salzkammergut Region
The Salzkammergut region is made up of ten smaller regions. 'Wolfgangsee' is where you will find the village of St Gilgen and Lake Wolfgang. Visit Lake Wolfgang and the surrounding area and you will take home many unforgettable memories. Energise the system with the beauty of this unique landscape...the lakes of pure water, clean enough to drink...and feel a new zest for life!
Those wanting to enjoy Lake Wolfgang and the Salzkammergut fully, should really visit and experience the local attractions whatever the season. The springs are warm, the summers are hot, the autumns are golden and the winters are a wonderland of white.
The area has much to offer including year round cable cars, mountain railways, nature reserves and cultural events. In the spring and summer there is lake swimming and bathing, walking, hiking, cycling, paragliding, tennis, horse riding, golf and boat trips, and in the winter there is ski-ing, snowboarding, tobogganing/sledging and sleigh rides.
In St Gilgen itself, you can ski on the slopes of the Zwölferhorn mountain. The cable car is just a 10 minute walk from the apartment. There are also the ski areas of the Postalm and Hintersee, which are within a 30 minute drive by car or you can take the daily ski bus to the Postalm. The Postalm is very much a family ski area and the selection of runs are suitable for both beginners and more experienced ski-ers. The Hintersee slopes are more challenging and are not used by the package holiday operators, which makes for less crowded slopes and good ski-ing for intermediates and experienced alike.
The Wolfgangsee region is made up of St Gilgen, St Wolfgang, Strobl and Abersee. The neighbouring regions of Wolfgangsee include Fuschlsee, MondSeeLand, Attersee, Bad Ischl and Inneres Salzkammergut.
The Village of St Gilgen
The lakeside village of St Gilgen, set amidst an array of mountains, is a typical Austrian village, very friendly with lots of pretty individual houses and shops. There are a good choice of restaurants, all offering a selection of fresh fish from the lake. And you will find that most cafes and restaurants offer their own homemade apple strudel with vanilla sauce or great dollops of cream! There is really everything you need in the village including a post office, newsagent, pharmacy, doctor's surgery, dentist, and just on the edge of the village is the tourist office and two large supermarkets (Spa & Billa) where you can pick up some good wine at great prices.
All year round, St Gilgen is ideal for those looking for a cultural break. In the village you can visit Mozart's mother's house, the church where his sister was married, as well as a museum on the life of Mozart.
In the summer, the lake can be enjoyed for swimming, sailing and other water sports or for a paddle steamer cruise, calling at all the other lakeside villages. There is also tennis and pitch & putt in the village and bicycles are available for hire and come supplied with a map of the local cycle routes. You can paraglide from the Zwölferhorn mountain, set on the edge of St Gilgen, or if you prefer hiking, there are an abundance of mountains in the area as well as lots of interesting walks.
In winter, skis and ski clothing can be hired from the local sports shop. On the outskirts of the village, there is a choice of gentle slopes for first time ski-ers to practice (also good for toboggans/sledges), or for the more advanced skiers, again you have the slopes of the Zwölferhorn mountain.
Skiberg Zwölferhorn
And not forgetting Salzburg.....
The city of Salzburg is approximately a 30 minute drive from St Gilgen. Salzburg is most famous for the magnificent composer Mozart and also for the classic film 'The Sound of Music'. In Salzburg you can enjoy a wonderful Mozart dinner concert, take a horse and carriage ride around the old city, visit the Fortress, the Mirabell Gardens, the Palace or just enjoy the wonderful shopping, the gluwein and Christmas market. There are an abundance of museums, art galleries and theatres including the amazing marionette theatre.
To get there

Car hire is advised although not necessary as the shuttle bus from the airport goes to the main bus station, where you can get a local bus to St Gilgen. The journey is approximately 1 hour and costs approx 4 euros. Driving, transfer time is approximately 30 minutes.
